2009年に導入された札幌市営地下鉄のIC乗車券をデザインしました。数名のデザイナーがデザインを持ち寄り、自分の案には投票できないというルールで投票が行われ、私たちの案が選ばれました。
フラクタルな図形をモチーフにするというのが参加者に与えられた課題でした。フラクタルというのは、図形の全体をいくつかの部分に分解していった時に、全体と同じ形が再現されていく構造のこと。何を言っているかわからないですよね。ぜひ調べてみてください。カリフラワーや海岸線など、自然の中にはたくさんのフラクタル図形の例があり、雪の結晶もそのひとつ。フラクタルな図形をモチーフにするという難関な課題は、雪が降る街・札幌らしいデザインを生み出そうという意図から出されたのではないかと思います。
IC乗車券の利用が開始されるまでの半年間、カード面のデザインの他、ご利用案内やウェブサイトのデザインを担当しました。
We designed the IC card for Sapporo city subway, which was introduced in 2009. Our design was selected from several other designers' works after a voting process where none of the other designers were able to vote for their own concepts.
Our theme for the competition was a design consisting of fractal shapes as a motif. A fractal is a type of mathematical shape that is infinitely complex. In essence, a fractal is a pattern that repeats forever, and every part of the fractal, regardless of how zoomed in, or zoomed out you are, it looks very similar to the whole image. Fractals surround us in so many aspects of daily life and occur naturally in nature with examples of their shapes in such things from cauliflowers and sunflowers to snowflakes and ice. We conceived the design of fractal shapes, a difficult task, with the intention to create a design that would be unique to Sapporo, and reflect the city's changing seasons.
We also created a user guide and website for the six months until the IC was introduced along with its design.
